Assessment as a Clean Start: Where Your Company Truly Stands with AI

The usual entry into an AI project is a conversation. A consultant comes, listens, nods, and two weeks later sends an offer. What's missing in this conversation is a common factual basis. Both sides talk about AI without knowing where the company actually stands.

An AI assessment reverses this order. It makes the maturity level visible before discussing measures or budget. Afterwards, you know what's already working, where the gaps are, and which next step is worthwhile.

This article explains what an AI assessment accomplishes, what it specifically examines, and why it is a clean entry point into an AI transformation.

The Problem with the Free Consultation Call

An open initial conversation has its value. As a basis for an AI project, it is not enough.

Statements remain subjective. The CEO describes their impression, IT has a different view, and marketing yet another. No one has the complete picture. An offer based on this is a guess with a price tag.

In addition: Without a current state analysis, one often starts in the wrong place. A tool is introduced even though data quality isn't sufficient. Or a governance policy is written even though there are no AI applications in-house yet. Activity without a clear position leads to expensive detours.

What an AI Assessment Reveals

An assessment systematically checks the maturity level, instead of guessing it. At 6Rocks, the assessment runs along the six pillars of every AI strategy:

  • Vision: Is there a clear goal for AI use, with an economic framework?
  • Governance: Are responsibilities, compliance, and guardrails regulated, also with a view to the EU AI Act?
  • Organization: Are roles, competencies, and adoption anchored within the team?
  • Data: Does the data foundation support the planned applications, in terms of quality and architecture?
  • Technology: Do the deployed use cases and tools match the requirements?
  • Iteration: Is there a mechanism to further develop AI beyond its initial introduction?

Each pillar receives an assessment. The result is not a gut feeling, but a profile: Here you are strong, here lies the biggest gap.

From Maturity Level to Prioritization

The actual value of the assessment is prioritization.

Once the six pillars are assessed, it becomes clear which step will yield results first. A company with a good data foundation but no governance needs different next steps than one with clear rules but weak data quality.

Thus, a vague "We need to do something with AI" turns into a concrete sequence. You invest where the gap costs the most, and not where the loudest trend currently lies. Governance and compliance are part of the assessment from the beginning, not an afterthought once the project is already underway.

What the Onboarding Process at 6Rocks Looks Like

The first step is intentionally low-threshold. The AI assessment quickly provides you with an initial current state analysis: Where does your company stand with AI, across all six pillars.

The next step builds on this: the AI Kickoff Design as the first structured project. Both are connected. The current state analysis provides the factual basis, and the Kickoff Design translates it into a concrete plan.

The attitude behind it is important. An assessment also qualifies you as a client. If it turns out that you don't need strategic transformation support, but rather tool training or a single data protection question, then that is an honest and good result.

What You Should Do Specifically

  1. Before the next tool: Clarify your position. An assessment is quick and prevents expensive detours.
  2. Include multiple perspectives: Management, IT, and departments view the maturity level differently. The assessment reconciles these views.
  3. Derive a sequence: Which of the six pillars is your biggest gap? That's where the work begins.
  4. Document the result: A documented maturity level serves as the basis for comparison for the next assessment in six to twelve months.

An AI transformation that truly delivers begins with an honest current state analysis. The assessment provides precisely this factual basis before budget flows.
